Unleash Your Outlandishness: Poems of Audacity and Weirdness
We writers sometimes find ourselves stuck in familiar patterns—for instance, writing narrative-driven poems about personal experiences. Sometimes we need to shake things up in order to reach a breakthrough. I believe that poetry is meant to be strange.
Strangeness is our source of surprise; it is how poets rejuvenate our sense of wonder for the world, and how we keep the language from going stale. This workshop is aimed at producing poems that break habits of somber and rational reflection and lead instead into strange, surprising revelations.
The core activities in this workshop will consist of a series of writing exercises, with opportunities for participants to share drafts with each other. We may also engage in a bit of philosophical conversation and examine a few sample poems for context and inspiration.
