SUPPORT DZANC
Dzanc
Books is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization that is dedicated
to promoting and publishing literary fiction as well as developing
educational programs that will utilize such fiction. We believe
that the key to our success is the work of community building
that both Dan Wickett and Steve Gillis have seen to date, and
the continuation of such.
With
his Emerging Writers Network, Dan has developed a network of over
1700 authors and readers who have a substantial interest in literary
fiction. These members do what they can to support each other
and the literary industry in whole. Steve Gillis founded 826 Michigan,
supporting literacy for children ages 8-18, as well as getting
involved in many other literary arenas in the SE Michigan area,
specifically the Ann Arbor Book Festival, EMU’s Creative Writing
Series, sponsoring a position at Greenhills School, and sponsoring
a Hopwood writing award at the University of Michigan. It is our
firm belief that continuing to develop and expand these communities
is the means to our developing solid programs that will promote
literary fiction. It is our hope that you will agree with us and
look into being an active member in this community through your
support.
While Dzanc Books is a non-profit organization,
we will be paying our authors just like any for-profit publishing
house. We will be supporting literary journals in their efforts
to develop readerships and continue to maintain their schedules,
at no cost to the literary journals. The educational programs
we set up will not be at any cost to the schools involved.
Dzanc Books will be able do the above, per our
mission statement, through the generosity of many. Your tax-deductible
donation (U.S. taxpayers only) will go toward our doing all
of the above the publishing, the support offered to literary
journals, and the educational programs.

Additionally, Dzanc has recently signed up for three different
programs that allow an individual to have money donated to our
nonprofit, and do so by changing a couple of habits instead of
having to write checks. And one of the programs is also very beneficial
to the environment.
First up is Funding
Factory and the recycling project. This program has Dzanc
collecting used inkjet and laser printing cartridges, as well
as used and out of date cell phones, and recycling them for credit.
It's a very simple program, Funding Factory provides boxes and
UPS labels, and that means no cost to those that take part in
the program.
If you are in a position to make the decision, or get a proposal
in front of the person at your workplace that does make such decisions
- we'd greatly appreciate your involvement. We would send you
a box and label and all you'd need to do is, instead of throwing
out the used cartridges (or cell phones), which are a tax on our
landfills, fill up the box, tape it up, and as it's already labeled,
the next time UPS makes a delivery to your place of business,
hand them the box. Your company throws less away, having a positive
effect on the environment, and Dzanc receives a check that will
be used for one of our Dzanc Writer in Residence Programs (DWIRP).
It is these educational programs that we are gearing money received
from these fundraising programs towards. Just email Dan at dan@dzancbooks.org
if you are interested in participating, or if you have any questions.
Second on the list is Goodsearch. As in www.goodsearch.com.
It is a Yahoo! powered search engine. Instead of using Google,
if you use Goodsearch, and enter Dzanc Books in the charity box,
we receive approximately a penny per search performed. They seem
to make things pretty simple too - after entering Dzanc Books
the first time you perform a search at the site, it looks as if
the name remains in the charity box unless you change it, thus
removing a step for all future searches.
While this might not sound like a lot, they estimate that if a group of 2000 people searched twice per day, nearly $15,000 would be raised over the course of a year. That will pay for between 2 and 3 of our DWIRPs, getting a writer in front of nearly 100 school children for an entire year.
The third program is for those who sell items via eBay.
Apparently, very soon (if they haven't already), eBay will be
reporting sales to the IRS. For those that wish to possibly reduce
or eliminate tax requirements right away, they have set up a program
in which you may donate a percentage of your sales dollars to
a nonprofit charity at the time of sale. This is the MissionFish
program. We are listed as a nonprofit that is eligible for such
a donation.
We greatly appreciate anything you can do that involves this trio of programs, and please feel free to pass along this information to as many people as possible.
Thank you!
