Dzanc Books is pleased to announce the winner of the 2017 Dzanc Books Short Story Collection Prize: White Dancing Elephants by Chaya Bhuvaneswar. In addition to publication by Dzanc, the prize also comes with a $2,500 advance.

In luminous, vivid, searingly honest prose, White Dancing Elephants tells stories that have not been heard before, centering on the experiences of diverse women of color, cunning, bold and resolute, who face down sexual harassment and racial violence, as well as the violence women inflict upon each other, including in intimate relationships.  Combining the speculative elements and wry psychological realism beloved by readers of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Margaret Atwood, Danzy Senna and Sandra Cisneros, this collection introduces Chaya Bhuvaneswar as an original and memorable new voice.

“From the first page, we were captivated by the intricate, beautiful prose and intimate storytelling,” said Michelle Dotter, editor-in-chief of Dzanc Books.  “These are stories as carefully arranged as sacred illuminations. We’re incredibly proud to introduce Chaya Bhuvaneswar and share her breathtaking work with the literary community.”

Bhuvaneswar, who is represented by Lane Zachary of Aevitas Creative Management, has received a Henfield Transatlantic Writing Award, as well as a Glimmer Train Honorable Mention and a Rhodes scholarship. She said of receiving the prize: “I was very pleasantly surprised, since I knew that terrific writers like Laura Van Den Berg, Emily Geminder, Roy Kesey, Ann Valente, and Luis Jaramillo, among many others, have received this award, and that the press publishes luminaries such as Robert Coover and Josip Novakovich.”

The Dzanc Books Short Story Collection Prize was created to recognize daring, original, and innovative writing. Dzanc Books is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization not only committed to producing quality literary works but providing creative writing instruction in public schools through the Dzanc Writers-in-Residence program and offering low-cost workshops for aspiring authors. Dzanc Books also runs annual prizes for the novel and nonfiction. For more information on the house, upcoming titles, and other prize winners, please visit
