Announcing the Winner of the Short Story Collection Prize

Dzanc Books is pleased to announce the winner of the 2018 Dzanc Books Short Story Collection Prize: Homesick by Nino Cipri. In addition to publication by Dzanc, the prize also comes with a $2,500 advance.

Dark, irreverent, and truly innovative, the nine stories in Homesick center on queer relationships and feature transgender or nonbinary characters.  These stories spotlight a superhero team of murdered girls; a man haunted by keys that appear suddenly in his throat; a housecleaner discovering an impossible ocean in her least-favorite clients’ house; and two exes and coworkers tasked with tracking a lost customer through a series of wormholes in their home-goods store.

“Reading Nino Cipri’s stories in Homesick reminded me of the very few collections I’ve read that I found myself getting more excited after each story and really not wanting to put the book down at all,” said Dan Wickett, Dzanc’s co-founder and founder of the Emerging Writers Network.  “This collection put me in mind of reading Roy Kesey’s All Over for the first time a decade ago—a book I’ve probably read some 20 times since then, and I believe I'll be doing the same with this collection.”

Cipri, a queer and nonbinary/transgender writer and a multidisciplinary artist, has been published in Tor.com, Fireside Fiction, Nightmare Magazine, and more. They said of receiving the prize: “The award was a surprise and a joy. Homesick represents a seven-year span of my writing, including the first story I ever published and a novella I completed three months ago. In my personal life, it encompasses a name change and gender transition, two presidential elections, five jobs, grad school, several heartbreaks, and finding and losing and finding home again. I owe gratitude to too many people to name individually, but I do want to thank my family, both the one I was born to and the ones I've found along the way, and the Dzanc editors who chose this strange little collection.” Cipri is represented by DongWon Song of the Howard Morhaim Literary Agency.

The Dzanc Books Short Story Collection Prize was created to recognize daring, original, and innovative writing.
